{"id":458,"date":"2010-06-18T10:52:50","date_gmt":"2010-06-18T16:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wis-injury.com\/blog\/?p=458"},"modified":"2010-06-18T10:52:50","modified_gmt":"2010-06-18T16:52:50","slug":"milwaukee-aldermen-approve-170000-for-lawsuit-settlements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wis-injury.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/milwaukee-aldermen-approve-170000-for-lawsuit-settlements.html","title":{"rendered":"Milwaukee Aldermen Approve $170,000 For Lawsuit Settlements"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Milwaukee&#8217;s aldermen cleaned up some legal affairs Tuesday, settling three lawsuits against the city for $170,000, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/milwaukee\/96399034.html\">http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/milwaukee\/96399034.html<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>One of the\u00a0settlements, for $75,000,\u00a0stemmed from a federal civil rights\u00a0suit that Earl Cosey and\u00a0his ex-girlfriend Michelle Brown filed against the city. In 2005 Cosey, a parolee, was being shook down\u00a0for guns by a Milwaukee police officer, Ala Awadallah.<\/p>\r\n<p>Cosey collected evidence against Awadallah by recording some of his phone calls with the police officer, and with incriminating voicemails that Awadallah sent him.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Awadallah in 2005 pleaded guilty to depriving a citizen of civil rights, and went to prison for a year.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Milwaukee paid a second settlement, a final payment of $75,000, to\u00a0city police Det.\u00a0Philip Sliwinski, who lost his job after\u00a0following a 2000 sting operation that had actually had targeted another detective,\u00a0Edwin Bonilla. Sliwinski was fired by then police chief Arthur Jones in 2002, even though he was never criminally charged.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Sliwinski sued over his firing. He won his case and was rehired,\u00a0and was awarded\u00a0more than $220,000 in back pay.
